Woolies To Sell Engagement Ring For 2p
Woolworths has launched an ‘engagement ring’ in its pic ‘n’ mix range due to demand from men that don’t want to risk thousands of pounds on a ring that may not fit or that their girlfriend may not like. The high street firm has received hundreds of letters, emails and calls from men saying they used a sweet or toy ring from Woolies to propose to their girlfriends before buying a permanent ring after the engagement. Now Woolworths has launched a specific product for the job.
The engagement ring is a ring-shaped jelly sweet that has been designed to look like an engagement ring. It costs only 2p (sold as pic ‘n’ mix which costs 69p per 100g), removing any financial risk and disappointment for the man (or female on February 29th!). As part of the product research, Woolworths quizzed 3,000 married female customers and found that 55 per cent of those that were surprised with a ring wouldn’t have chosen the same ring themselves (72 per cent of respondents in total were surprised with a ring). With over 280,000 weddings in the UK every year and the average engagement ring costing £1,289, that suggests men waste £144 million every year on the wrong engagement ring.
“I’ve had loads of letters and hear stories through friends and contacts of pic ‘n’ mix and toy rings being used to cut the financial risk of buying an engagement ring,” says Amy McAuslane, Woolworths’ pic ‘n’ mix buyer.
“Our new engagement ring will advertise the fact that you don’t have to waste thousands on the wrong ring. A sweet ring can be just as romantic and add some fun to one of the most important moments in your life. Choosing the real ring after the event adds to the fun and romance. “When the product is rolled out we could sell hundreds of thousands a year, so we have the potential to become the biggest selling engagement ring retailer in the UK. But we won’t make as much money as the jewellers.
The profit margin on a 2p ring isn’t huge!” The engagement ring pic ‘n’ mix sweet goes on sale on Friday 29th February in five Woolworths stores in London (Edgware Road, Portobello Road, Swiss Cottage, Camden Town and Islington) and in 200 stores in the summer.
